A new suite of courses on offer in 2020, including occupational therapy, speech pathology and nutrition, will help serve the needs of the Territory’s health sector.
Charles Darwin University will offer more than 30 new courses in 2020, including nine postgraduate nursing and midwifery courses.
College of Health and Human Sciences Assistant Dean Dr Sufyan Akram said the new allied health courses, which combine a Bachelor of Health Science and Masters, would enable local students to study in their home town, rather than travelling interstate for similar allied health degrees.
“We know that if we can encourage local and interstate students to undertake their studies in the Northern Territory, then it is more likely that they will choose to stay and work in the Territory,” Dr Akram said.
“Almost 100 prospective students have chosen one of the three allied health courses as their first preference, so we know there is a strong interest in studying these courses in the NT.
“Studying in the Territory is unique. We will be preparing graduates with a local perspective and a global outlook.”
Dr Akram said the new courses would help to serve the needs of the Territory’s growing health sector.
“Currently, we fly in a lot of interstate health professionals to work in our local health workforce,” he said. “We want to change that by developing our health workforce in the Territory.
“CDU is the university of the NT and as the College of Health and Human Sciences we are here to help meet our region’s health needs.”
With more than 3400 CDU higher education offers made to students across the country and abroad so far, Vice-Chancellor Professor Simon Maddocks said 2020 was shaping up to be a busy year for the university.
“We are pleased to offer a range of new study options for local and international students in 2020,” Professor Maddocks said.
“These courses have been developed by our six colleges based on the needs of our community, industry and government.
“I encourage all current and prospective students to look at the more than 50 scholarships on offer through CDU that can assist them to undertake their studies.”
