Australian universities will receive a boost to develop important infrastructure, equipment and facilities that will assist researchers to conduct world-class research to address problems in areas including energy, technology, health, environment, communications, advanced manufacturing, transport and security.
Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Research Council (ARC), Ms Leanne Harvey, has welcomed the announcement by Minister for Education and Training, Senator the Hon. Simon Birmingham, of $28.6 million for 48 projects funded through the ARC Linkage Infrastructure, Equipment and Facilities (LIEF) scheme.
“This important scheme allows collaboration between higher education providers and partner organisations to develop and support expensive research infrastructure,” Ms Harvey said.
“These 48 LIEF research projects will commence next year, involving collaboration with 56 organisations and industry partners from across the globe. These collaborating organisations will provide a further $31.1 million in cash and in-kind contributions to these projects.”
Some of the research projects set to receive funding in the LIEF funding round to commence in 2017 include:

$502,453 for The Australian National University to create a laser system for the first laser guide star for use in astronomy, satellite tracking and mitigation of the threat of space debris.
$458,000 to researchers at Swinburne University of Technology for a three-dimensional printing facility using concrete for rapid automated creation of construction materials.
$552,000 for Southern Cross University to create a floating, mobile fisheries and oceanographic observing system for Eastern Australia.
