Arts and humanities among best in the world

Murdoch University’s arts and humanities research and education programs have rated among the best in the world, according to the latest Times Higher Education (THE) ranking.

The University ranked in the 201-250 bracket for the subjects, alongside Australian universities such as the University of Adelaide and the Queensland University of Technology. Murdoch is also the second highest ranked university in WA, behind the University of Western Australia (UWA).

This is the first time Murdoch has featured in the THE World University Rankings for arts and humanities, which has expanded to include 400 institutions, up from 100 in 2016.

The latest THE World University Rankings highlights the universities that are leading in teaching and research across art, performing arts, languages, history, philosophy, theology, architecture and archaeology subjects.

Murdoch’s School of Arts Dean Rikki Kersten, said the global ranking was encouraging, reflecting the world-class research and teaching excellence within the school.

“Our academic staff bring their latest research into the classroom, underpinning our creative arts, communications and humanities teaching,” Professor Kersten said.

“By delivering our students with work integrated learning opportunities and industry standard facilities – including theatres, media labs and studios – Murdoch ensures they can take their place in the workforce.

“We have strong links with the Asian and Indo-Pacific regions through the Asia Research Centre and courses in Asian Studies and languages. This allows us to provide our students with global internship opportunities.”

The ranking employs the same range of 13 performance indicators used in the overall THE World University Rankings, with the methodology recalibrated to suit the individual fields.

No institution can be included in the THE arts and humanities ranking unless it has published at least 250 papers in relevant fields over the previous five years.

The Australian National University is the top ranked Australian university at 33. Stanford University in the United States takes out the top spot.
