Charles Darwin University has featured in the Times Higher Education (THE) Millennial Ranking of Young Universities founded since the turn of the century. CDU was ranked 9th in the world and was the only Australian university to place in the top 10.
The ranking comes after the release of the THE “Young University Ranking” for 2018, which identifies the top 250 universities around the world that are aged less than 50 years old.
As part of the Young University Rankings, THE created several subset rankings including the Millennials list of universities established between 2000 and the present day.
This is the sixth time CDU has featured in the THE Young University Ranking, which was expanded in 2018 to include the best 250 institutions – up from 200 in 2017. In 2018 CDU has ranked 43rd overall.
CDU Vice-Chancellor Professor Simon Maddocks said a ranking among 250 of the best young universities in 55 different countries was a significant achievement.
“I congratulate the staff and the whole university community on this achievement,” Professor Maddocks said.
CDU’s strongest scores were for international outlook, staff to student ratio and citations, which reflects the number of times researchers around the world have quoted CDU research.
“This is a great endorsement of the quality and excellence of research programs at the university,” Professor Maddocks said.
“As a small regional university we will continue to work hard to maintain our ranking in the fiercely competitive international system. To be recognised within the Top 10 of the world’s newest universities of this century is an outstanding achievement.”
A total of 22 Australian universities featured on the overall Young Universities Under 50 list in 2018, with CDU 7th among the Australian institutions.
The Young University Ranking complements the annual “THE World University Rankings”, in which CDU is ranked in the top two percent of universities worldwide.
Performance indicators for both rankings include teaching (the learning environment), research (volume, income and reputation), citations (research influence), international outlook (staff, students and research) and industry income (innovation).
