Murdoch University is partnering with the Western Australian Cricket Association to deliver an innovative Western Australia-first International Cricket Academy.

Former Australian cricketer Mike Hussey will be the ambassador for the Murdoch University WACA International Cricket Academy.

From 2021, Murdoch and the WACA will offer a 10-week Academy training program, with coaching from WACA coaching staff at both Murdoch University’s cricket facilities and the WACA Ground. The program is available to all Murdoch University students.

Murdoch University Vice Chancellor Eeva Leinonen said the Murdoch University WACA International Cricket Academy provided cricket enthusiasts the opportunity to complete higher education study while receiving cricket training from the WACA’s coaching staff.

“It will see these budding cricketers get high level training while pursuing their educational goals as well,” Professor Leinonen said.

“We will be looking to expand this program to be for six to 12 months, so students aspiring to the highest levels of cricket will find Murdoch an option in which they can focus on both their sporting and study goals.

“While their goal is to play cricket at the highest levels, a cricket career is not for life and it is important they have a career to pursue after cricket.

This Academy will provide the platform for a cricket career and a post-cricket career.”

WACA CEO Christina Matthews said: “We are very proud to partner with Murdoch University and deliver an Academy of this kind, which will arm cricket players with great career development opportunities and help set themselves up for a life off the pitch.

“This Academy will not only help strengthen students’ skills on the field, it will allow them to further develop skills like leadership, teamwork and discipline which they can apply to their studies and future careers.

The International Cricket Academy will be promoted in Australia and to students from countries including New Zealand, South Africa, Zimbabwe, West Indies, United Kingdom, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Singapore.

Mr Hussey, who played 79 Test matches, 185 One Day Internationals and 38 T20 Internationals for Australia, will be the face of the campaign to promote the International Cricket Academy.

“It is an honour to be ambassador for this new and innovative program offered by Murdoch University,” Mr Hussey said.

“Students who love their cricket will cherish the opportunity to study while getting intensive training from the WACA’s best coaches.”
