The Federal Minister for Education and Training, Senator the Hon. Simon Birmingham, has announced an additional $1.4 million to support three new research projects funded under the Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage Projects scheme.
ARC Acting Chief Executive Officer, Ms Leanne Harvey, said the ARC is continuing to deliver on the Australian Government’s National Innovation and Science Agenda (NISA) measure to improve research-industry collaboration and ‘fast-track’ research funding decisions.
“Proposals for these new Linkage Projects have been considered through the new continuous application and assessment process—resulting in quicker funding decisions,” said Ms Harvey.
“A crucial part of the Linkage Projects scheme is collaboration, and these three projects involve significant partnerships between higher education researchers and other parts of the national innovation system, including industry—with matching cash and in-kind contributions provided by their partner organisations.”
The new projects awarded funding include:
- $485,000 for a project led by Professor Allan Pring from The Flinders University of South Australia, who will work with BHP Billiton and the South Australian Museum, to find new methods of copper recovery from low grade copper ores, which are currently uneconomic to mine
- $469,000 to Professor Huanting Wang from Monash University, for a project involving Coal Energy Australia and Nanjing Industrial technology Research Institute of Membrane, to develop advanced membrane fabrication technology to improve wastewater treatment, desalination, and purification
- $466,072 to Dr Monika Doblin from The University of Melbourne, for a project working with Under the Tree Biopharmaceuticals, to improve yields of therapeutically-active cannabinoids to resource a new and growing global industry.
From 1 July 2016, the ARC commenced accepting proposals under the Linkage Projects scheme on a continuous basis—a significant move away from the previous ‘one round per year’ approach, with successful grants announced on a continuing basis throughout the year.
More details about the Linkage Projects announced are available from the ARC website.
