A new traineeship in pet grooming to begin in July 2018 will give Western Australians on-the-job training in a salon environment.
The Dog Groomers Association of Western Australia called for the creation of the traineeship pathway to create entry-level job opportunities, improve industry standards and protect pet owners from untrained operators.
The industry found pet owners, salon owners and other pet businesses were finding it difficult to find experienced groomers, with skilled groomers booked out months in advance.
Pet grooming is a highly practical profession that lends itself perfectly to employment-based training.
The new traineeship pathway will support business expansion and provide increased job opportunities.
South Metropolitan TAFE will support businesses to deliver the traineeship from Semester 2, 2018.
The new Jobs and Skills Centres can provide assistance to those who would like to undertake a traineeship pathway but do not have an employer.
