Students find Fintern Fever

CSIRO MedTech event

Australian university students will have the chance at speed dating to secure an internship with a high-growth start-up.

The Fintern Fever #2 event will take place at Australia’s leading Fintech hub, Stone & Chalk in Sydney on Thursday, 2 June 2016.

Using Data61’s Ribit platform, over 50 students from NSW and interstate universities will speed date with a Fintech start-up to secure a role over the mid-winter break.

Special guest speaker Sally-Ann Williams, Engineering and Community Outreach Manager at Google will also be attending the event.

“Fintech is one of the fastest growing sectors in Australia and around the world, with Frost & Sullivan estimating that the Australian Fintech market will grow to $4 billion by 2020,” CEO of Stone & Chalk, Alex Scandurra said.

“It is an important area for future economic growth.

“By bringing students together with high-growth start-ups we are building a valuable talent pipeline for this rapidly growing industry.”

In 2015 the first Fintern Fever saw 26 interns matched with 17 start-ups and a number of students have continued to work with the businesses while they completed their studies.

“Some of the students have even landed full-time roles, which shows that having an internship or work experience is one of the best ways to secure full-time employment after you graduate,” Director of Ribit, Liz Jakubowski said.

“By working with a company during your studies you can learn important skills that employers look for and gain an understanding on workplace culture.”

The event begins with each of the start-ups delivering a 30-second pitch to the students, followed by a six-minute window for the students to promote themselves.

The best ‘matches’ end up with a role at the company.

Regardless of whether the students end up with a job or not, it is a valuable way of learning how to pitch themselves, develop new skills and grow their confidence.

CSIRO’s Data61 launched Ribit as an online platform to easily connect students to start-ups and businesses for the work experience they need to be ready for the workforce.

Stone & Chalk is the leading space for Fintech start-ups, across the full spectrum of the Fintech landscape (from payments, peer-to-peer lending, crowd-funding, automated advice, capital markets and crypto-currencies) and includes high-growth companies like Spotcap, Cover Genius, and Data Republic.
